I started to learn to fence at school in 1960 and I do not think I have stopped learning. After leaving school I joined the Ilford fencing club then Salle Boston and had Steve Boston as my coach for some years. I moved to Cambridgeshire in 1980 and joined the Huntingdonshire Fencing club, which I still belong today as their treasurer and head coach. I also now coach at Anglian Ruskin University in Cambridge. I took my coaching qualifications in all 3 weapons in the early 1990`s with the BAF. I was County Chair for some 17/18 years through the 1980`s/1990`s. I became very interested in refereeing and have been qualified for coming up 20 years. I have now qualified in all 3 weapons. My interest took me to serve on the BFA REFCOM (Referees committee) for about 3 years. I joined the Eastern Region Committee in Jan 2013 as referee development officer and have been involved with the region ever since. I was elected chair at the AGM in October 2015.
I am a (non-fencing) Mum of three who works part-time as a Finance Manager and I started volunteering for Eastern region in September 2015 as social media manager, then took over events when the organiser, at the time, decided to step down which I do with help from a small team of volunteers of mainly non-fencing parents. In December 2017 I also took over the treasurer position because this is my background and stood down from the social media role. Alongside this I support my son’s fencing club as a parent helper.
I do love doing what I do. I hope that I make a difference to the sport participation by keeping the events going and there is a bonus that I have made a lot of new friends along the way, which is great!
As with many fencing parents, I spend a lot of time travelling with my son to support his fencing journey.
I’ve been fencing just over 5 years now. I started fencing in Lincoln, but since moving to Norwich for University, UEA Fencing has become my primary club. I compete, referee, and coach. My preferred weapon is sabre, but I do enjoy foil and epee too!
I am a non-fencing mum of two girls. My younger daughter started fencing at an after school club and her passion grew from there. I started volunteering in 2017 as Secretary for the Eastern Region Committee after seeing a handwritten sign at one of the competitions asking for volunteers to help. I was hesitant as i didn’t really fancy hanging around in sports halls for hours on end but the Secretary role didn’t need me to be at the competitions which was a relief!
In 2018 I took on the Development Officer role and passed the Secretary Role to Michelle.
I love feeling that I’m helping, even in a small way, to increase participation in the sport.
